ART AND MENTAL WELLBEING
Understanding the connection between the arts and improving your mental well-being
Finding a creative outlet can be a fantastic way of developing a coping mechanism for the stresses of school, college or even work. In a recent study by MIND, "78%* of young people said that school had made their mental health worse" (Mind, 2021) such statistics are very alarming and show one of many issues with the education system.
It is without doubt that academic success is being prioritised within schools, causing less time and resources for meaningful creative learning to be available to young people. While it is important to mention that mental health issues can originate from many different areas of a person's life, it is important to acknowledge a very common area of stress is education and specifically exam stress.
Although the need for academic success is important when trying to get into a chosen career or even university, it should not be prioritised over your mental well-being.

Here at sketch it is our aim to give you the resources and expertise of visual artists to help you learn at your own pace. This could be to help you with your studies, hone your own talent or even to find a coping mechanism outside of your studies. Art can be used in a variety of ways, which is why it is important to have resources available for educational, hobbyists or relaxation purposes. You do not have to be gifted at art to find it relaxing or to use it as a coping mechanism during a stressful time, it is about trying something you may not do typically, or that is completely different from your other interests.

BENEFITS OF DRAWING FOR YOUNG PEOPLE
The Importance of developing a young person's drawing skills
Developing your drawing skills at any age is a good way to see improvements in what you are producing. Drawing can be a fantastic way for children and young people to develop their fine motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination, the identification of shapes and patterns, finding ways to express yourself and your creative style and even your problem solving skills. All of these elements are important through many areas of education and everyday life, which is why learning how to use artistic mediums, like pens and pencils effectively is really invaluable.

Having the ability to draw at a basic level is valuable to many areas of industry and the world of work, not just within a career in the arts. Many employers and careers require an understanding of how to sketch, draw and produce designs, and hold such requirements as important as being, highly academic, a good communicator or being a team-player. Therefore, the need for creative minds is needed more now than ever.
